Alcohol & Work Performance

When I drank I felt stuck in my career because so much energy was being spent on nights out and then recovering.

At the time I was working in alcohol treatment and I enjoyed my job, but it made me reflect more on the impact alcohol was having on my own life.

When I started cutting back and focusing more on things that gave something back, like photography, fitness, getting outdoors - I realised I was happier, and that alcohol was detrimental.

People at work started saying they noticed a change and that I was taking on more responsibility. And it made sense because I had more energy and felt more present the less I drank.

Over the past 11 years without alcohol, I've avoided about a 1000 hangovers.

That's almost 3 years I haven't spent lying in bed, feeling drained, anxious and dreading Monday morning.

Now, the most important part of work doesn't start at my desk - it's how I spend my free time. Taking trips into the mountains with my family, my camera and feeling recharged after.

I'm not perfect and I still neglect things that make me feel better, but being alcohol-free has given me a level of self belief I never had when I was drinking.

And because of that, I've been able to progress in my career and take more positive risks.
