How We Got Here
Origin
Arclett was shaped over the course of Scott’s career, combining more than 15 years working in alcohol treatment with over a decade of lived experience living alcohol-free. Bringing together professional insight & personal experience, Arclett was created to humanise alcohol prevention, reduce stigma and support people quietly questioning their relationship with alcohol.
Why Now
Alcohol has existed alongside human culture for thousands of years. It has long played a role in celebration, ritual & social connection.
Alcohol prevention, by comparison, is relatively recent ~ emerging through public health and social reform movements over the past two centuries as awareness of alcohol-related harm grew.
Yet it is only in the past decade that we have seen a significant cultural shift toward alcohol-free living. Movements like Dry January, alongside the rise of Low & No products and growing interest in sober curiosity, have begun to normalise choosing not to drink. We believe we are still at the beginning of this cultural transition.
The Story Behind Arclett
Arclett was founded in 2022 by Scott Woolley, whose career in alcohol treatment began in 2007. After years working within the field, Scott recognised that much of the conversation focused on problems once they had already developed ~ while fewer spaces existed for people who were simply curious, reflective or questioning their relationship with alcohol.
Long before alcohol-free living became part of mainstream conversation, Scott chose to stop drinking himself. At that time, the language of sober curiosity did not yet exist, alcohol-free options were limited, and choosing not to drink was often viewed through a lens of restriction rather than choice. The decision was frequently met with stigma, and labels carrying negative connotations, with little social proof to show that alcohol non-use could be normal, positive or widely shared.
This experience, combined with professional insight, shaped a belief that prevention could feel more human, relatable and culturally relevant ~ focused not only on harm, but also on identity, belonging and possibility.
During lockdown, sharing his personal story sparked unexpected connection within a growing community of people exploring alcohol-free living. The response highlighted the power of storytelling and social proof in helping people feel less alone when questioning drinking culture, reinforcing the idea that cultural change plays a vital role in prevention.
From Idea to Movement
The concept for Arclett emerged at Loch Arklet in the Scottish Highlands, where the connection between photography, nature, and alcohol-free living became clear. The outdoors ~ a personal alternative to drinking for many years ~ became a guiding influence on the brand’s identity and content.
After 18 months of development, Arclett launched alongside Dry January 2023, combining lived experience, public health understanding, and creative storytelling to support early prevention and cultural change.
Today, Arclett exists to humanise alcohol prevention by creating space for curiosity, connection, and community ~ helping people explore alcohol non-use in a way that feels normal, inclusive, and grounded in real life.
