Llyn Elsi

Llyn Elsi had somehow slipped past us for years. We’ve been to Betws-y-Coed more times than I can count, but it’s usually a stop on the way home ~ food at the Stables, a wander around the shops, then back up the A55.

Growing up, Betws-y-Coed was somewhere we’d pass through after staying in a cottage nearby, and it’s always stuck with me because of that. It still feels like a special place.

This trip was our first time away together as a couple since having our daughter. No schedule, no early starts ~ just a simple walk and some space.

We stayed at the Royal Oak and finally made the effort to head uphill instead. I’m glad we did.

The climb out of the village from St Mary’s Church gets your attention straight away. Steep from the off, legs working within minutes. It doesn’t last forever though ~ after about 25 minutes it eases, levels out and the pace slows.

Once you reach the lake, everything feels calmer. Llyn Elsi sits quietly above the village, tucked in Gwydyr Forest, and despite being so close it feels far away. We took our time looping around, stopping for food and tea along the path, no rush, just enjoying being out.

We timed it well, as the light started to fade, we hung around a bit longer, catching those last bits of winter colour and taking a few sundown photos before heading back down to the hotel.

After places like Llyn Idwal, Capel Curig, Llyn Padarn & Snowdon, Betws-y-Coed sits perfectly on the way home to the Wirral..

Llyn Elsi isn’t dramatic or loud. It doesn’t need to be. It’s quietly stunning, with snowy mountains sitting in the background, and it was exactly what we needed.
